David vs. Goliath

This post originally appeared on Instagram on December 10, 2020.

Up and down the Bible, we see humble, simple people called by God to do mighty deeds.

One such figure was a shepherd boy named David. The prophet Samuel, guided by God, anointed this boy, the youngest of 8 sons, to be the future king of Israel. Then David went back to tending the sheep. Later, with a brazen, radical confidence in God, David volunteered to fight the Philistine giant and save his people. After trying on heavy armor, he decided instead to use his own slingshot and “smooth stones” to take down Goliath.

No heavy armor. No battle training. Just his experience as a shepherd and the tools of his trade.

David’s great and mighty deeds were in fact accomplished by GOD, using David’s faith, his assent to God’s will, and his desire for God’s GLORY to reign.

That’s it.

We live in a time when so-called Big Tech, Big Pharma, Big Etc Etc appear to be winning. They are our Goliaths.

But that’s not how God works. These giants won’t win in the end. All will be revealed and the glory of God will be made manifest again through, and for, and by His cherished people.

Do you have a radical faith in God?
Do you assent to His will?
Do you pray for His glory to be known?

Then God will use you.

Don’t worry that you’re “just” a stay at home mom, a college kid, a grandmother, or “just” an anything. Your “littleness” is a testament to God’s greatness!

Great saints are made from simple people. In fact, I would argue that it’s the only way saints are made.

Have faith in God.
Do His will.
Give Him all the glory.

These are our “smooth stones,” like David. Goliath will not stand.

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down, and cut off your head; and I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel...”
-1 Samuel 17:45-46
