Be like Saint Joseph.

This Fathers Day, I want to encourage every father to be like Saint Joseph.

Scripture tells us that Saint Joseph:

•was a just and righteous man and protected his wife from shame (Matt 1:19)

•listened to and responded to God’s commands through the angels (Matt 1:20-24, Matt 2:13-14, Matt 2:19-23)

•protected his Child from harm and death (Matt 2:13-14)

•searched for his Son when He was lost (Luke 2:43-47)

•was obedient to the demands of his faith (Luke 2:21-39, Luke 2:41-51)

Though there are no recorded words of Saint Joseph in the Bible, we can tell these things about him, and much more besides. In the end, we can trust that God provided the perfect earthly father to His Divine Son, just as each father on earth is given specifically for his children.

May every father model his life after Saint Joseph, by living a life of chastity and obedience, ever attuned to the demands of God and the needs of his wife and children.

And since I know the vast majority of the people following here are women, I invite you to remember that Joseph’s words were never recorded and it’s okay if your husband is the strong, silent type. Look to his actions. Encourage him to be as good a man as you know him to be, yes, but do not nag or belittle him. Your affection for him and submission to him will accomplish more than any henpecking.

Saint Joseph, pray for all the fathers of the world!
